HRDC Hosts the Labour Market Information System (LMIS) Workshop

The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) is hosting the Labour Market Information System (LMIS) Reporting Workshop on the 27th and 28thAugust, 2025 at Travel Lodge, Gaborone. The workshop is designed to equip participants with the skills to analyse and report on labour market indicators using Botswana’s LMIS.Stat platform. These reports will feed into the Labour Market Observatory (LMO) Governing Body, which oversees the use of labour data in national planning.

The participants to this workshop include Government Officials, Researchers, and Development Partners, working together towards strengthening Botswana’s labour market reporting systems, with main focus on youth employment. The initiative is held in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), which has supported HRDC in developing LMIS capacity.

In his opening remarks during the workshop, HRDC’s Chief Operations Officer (COO), Mr. Meshack Tafa noted that youth unemployment is one of Botswana’s most pressing challenges. He outlined several root causes contributing to youth unemployment, including: a persistent mismatch between education and labour market needs; limited private sector job creation; weak linkages between training institutions and employers; inadequate career guidance; and barriers faced by rural youth, such as poor digital access and limited transport

The COO emphasised that robust labour market reporting is essential to guide targeted interventions in skills development, education reform, and employment creation. “The ability to accurately interpret labour market indicators and translate them into high-quality, evidence-based reports will strengthen our collective response,” he said.

Mr. Tafa expressed deep appreciation to the ILO for its technical and institutional support, noting that the partnership exemplifies the kind of collaboration needed to address complex challenges like unemployment.

As the workshop continues, HRDC is expected to consolidate recommendations that will inform future labour market strategies, with a focus on creating inclusive opportunities for Botswana’s youth.
