HRDC Partners with Barloworld to Tackle Skills Gaps and Youth Unemployment

Gaborone, Botswana - The Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) has taken a bold step in redefining corporate partnerships for national development through a full facility tour of the newly launched Barloworld Equipment Centre in Phakalane. The visit, which included the company’s advanced Learning Centre, marks a strategic collaboration aimed at tackling Botswana’s skills shortage, youth unemployment, and workforce alignment challenges.

The HRDC delegation was led by CEO Professor Alinah K. Segobye, accompanied by Director of Funding, Mr. Mothusi Masole and other representatives from key HRDC departments. Their presence underscored the Council’s commitment to engaging directly with industry leaders and exploring innovative pathways for human capital development.

Barloworld Equipment, a leading distributor of Caterpillar® machinery and power systems across southern Africa, is known for its technical expertise, innovative training, and commitment to workforce empowerment. With operations spanning mining, construction, and energy sectors, the company plays a pivotal role in industrial growth across the region.

The tour offered HRDC a comprehensive view of Barloworld’s operations-from technical servicing and parts sales to its robust training programmes in apprenticeships, internships, equipment diagnostics, and CAT certifications. These initiatives directly support HRDC’s mandate to cultivate a skilled, job-ready workforce and serve as a blueprint for how corporate organisations can contribute meaningfully to national progress.

“Giving back is not just corporate, it’s human development,” said HRDC CEO, emphasising the role of businesses in uplifting communities and investing in future generations.

Barloworld also shared its broader impact strategy, including its Centre of Excellence in South Africa, which delivers advanced practical training and CSR initiatives. The engagement sparked meaningful dialogue around how similar models could be adapted to benefit Botswana’s youth and underserved communities.

This collaboration positions HRDC and Barloworld Equipment as champions of corporate-driven human development. The tour not only showcased operational excellence but also demonstrated the transformative potential of public-private partnerships in driving inclusive growth.

As discussions continue, HRDC calls on other corporate organizations to follow suit with leveraging their infrastructure, expertise, and social responsibility to build a future where every young Motswana has access to opportunity, training, and purpose.
